Mali 2013: An election against all odds

Mali heads to the polls on July 28 in the country’s first election since last year’s coup, a jihadist takeover of northern Mali, and a French military intervention in the impoverished West African nation. Despite calls for a postponement, the election is being held on schedule amid security fears and voter registration complaints. Twenty-seven candidates are contesting the 2013 presidential poll. If there is no outright winner, a second round is scheduled for August 11.Image
